The second Viennese school has long represented the surest source of modernity and, in this, it occupies a privileged place. Listening to Schoenberg, Berg or Webern is a sure way to challenge acquired habits. Here performed by the cosmopolitan pianist Jean-Louis Steuerman, these piano pieces are accompanied by the photography of Michael Ackerman who, to illustrate this universe, has chosen pieces expressing specific atmospheres where time is both unbalanced and suspended. The photographer invites listeners, in all freedom, to immerse themselves musically in his suggestions.
The performance by Jean Louis Steuerman is sensitive and musical, yet follows the strictures laid down by Berg, Schoenberg, and Webern. For the first time, this music has true personality. It's never caught on as music to enjoy. Admire, yes. but not look forward too. Steuerman changes all that. The packaging is weird. It's presented in a book format with photographs. Unfortunately, these photographs are fine in their own right but they certainly aren't evocative of the music in my mind. Also, many of the photographs are marred by the binding which doesn't do them artistic justice at all.The odd shape makes it hard for us collectors to put it with the rest of the cds on our shelves. So I'll probably file the recording in a blank jewel case and lose the book.
